mmWave radar works differently: it can detect presence through subtle physical signals rather than movement alone, sensitive enough to pick up the rise and fall of someone’s chest while they’re sitting or lying still. SwitchBot’s version combines both technologies in one unit, a PIR sensor for fast initial motion detection plus mmWave for confirming someone’s still there afterward. That combination is the real feature being sold here, not just a bigger, more expensive motion sensor.

What You Get at This Price

The specs are genuinely reasonable for the cost: a 120-degree field of view detecting motion out to 8 meters and stationary presence out to 5 meters, plus built-in light and sound sensors alongside the presence detection. It’s a real three-in-one sensor, not just a motion sensor with a new name.

The catch worth knowing before buying: Matter connectivity isn’t built in. Getting this sensor onto a Matter network requires SwitchBot’s own Hub 3, a separate $99.99 purchase, with bridging handled through SwitchBot’s app rather than the sensor pairing directly. If you’re not already in the SwitchBot ecosystem or don’t want another hub, that’s a real added cost on top of the sensor’s own low price, worth factoring in before assuming the $30 price tag is the whole story.

Where the Cheap Version Falls Short

Two limitations are worth knowing before you assume this replaces every motion sensor in your home. First, response time: the sensor reportedly waits about five seconds before confirming whether it’s detecting real movement, which is a noticeable delay compared to a standard motion sensor’s near-instant trigger. A Meross presence sensor sits at a similar price point but supports Thread directly, meaning it doesn’t require a separate hub purchase to join a Matter network, a real advantage if you don’t already own SwitchBot hardware. On the higher end, Aqara’s FP2 costs more than double at over $80, and for that premium it adds capabilities the budget option doesn’t have: detecting multiple people at once and dividing a room into detection zones rather than treating the whole field of view as one presence signal.

None of that makes the SwitchBot sensor a bad buy; reviewers have specifically called it “relatively basic” next to the FP2 rather than broken or unreliable, and basic is a fair tradeoff at roughly a third of the price. It just means the $30 sensor is the right choice for someone who wants accurate stay-detection in a single room, not the right choice for someone trying to build out zone-based, multi-person automation across a larger space.

That table is only as good as what’s been independently confirmed, so treat the Meross row’s blanks as genuinely unverified rather than assumed identical to SwitchBot; the point of including it is the Thread-without-a-hub detail, which is well documented and the single biggest practical difference between the two budget options.

Where This Category Makes Sense, and Where It Doesn’t

A short, concrete list of the situations where paying for presence detection over a basic motion sensor is worth it:

  • A desk or reading chair where a light or fan keeps shutting off while you’re sitting still
  • A home office where you want a “someone’s on a call” automation that doesn’t require remembering to trigger it manually
  • A nursery or bedroom where detecting breathing-level stillness matters more than catching a quick walk-through
  • A bathroom, a classic motion-sensor failure case, where standing still at a sink or in a shower routinely triggers “no one’s here” light shutoffs

Where it’s genuinely not worth the upgrade: a hallway, entryway, or stairwell, anywhere the whole point is catching brief transit rather than sustained presence. A basic PIR motion sensor is cheaper, faster to respond, and just as effective in those spots, and there’s no real benefit to paying more for stay-detection nobody needs there.

One hands-on review reported closer to a month of runtime in a high-traffic room with the sensor set to maximum detection distance, a useful reminder that manufacturer battery estimates assume lighter use than a genuinely busy space will put on the sensor. If battery life matters to your specific placement, checking the actual listing you’re buying from, rather than assuming the headline number, is worth the extra minute.

Is This Worth Buying Over a Regular Motion Sensor

If what you want is a sensor that keeps a light or automation active while you’re sitting still, reading, working at a desk, watching something, a plain motion sensor genuinely can’t do that job regardless of price, and this is the category that solves it. At $30-ish per unit, it’s priced close enough to a standard motion sensor that there’s little reason to buy the older technology for a room where stay-detection genuinely matters.
