Ring Protect Plans in 2026: What You Get Without a Subscription

A Ring doorbell works the day you install it, even if you never pay for a plan. What you get without one is narrower than most people expect, and Ring renamed its plans in 2026, which makes older articles confusing. This guide lays out what stays free, what the Ring Protect plans add, and what the plans cost over three years, using Ring’s own pages. Where Ring’s pages and third-party sites disagree on a price, we say so.

What you get without a Ring Protect plan

Ring’s own blog says that without a plan you keep the core live features:

  • Live View, so you can watch the video stream from the app
  • Motion alerts on your phone
  • Two-Way Talk
  • Motion Zones
  • Live view through Alexa on compatible Echo Show or Fire TV devices

What you lose without a plan

Ring does not record or store video without a Ring Protect plan. Its support page says events are only recorded after you subscribe, so you cannot go back and review something that happened while you were away. Video history, playback and features built on recorded video need a plan.

New Ring devices come with a free 30-day trial of Ring Protect, according to Ring’s blog, so you can see the difference before you decide.

The plans and what they cost

Ring’s help pages say its plans were renamed in 2026. The US page at ring.com/plans lists these monthly prices:

  • Ring Solo: $4.99 a month, covering a single Ring device
  • Ring Multi: $9.99 a month, covering all Ring devices at one location
  • Ring Pro: $19.99 a month, which adds emergency response for Ring Alarm
  • Virtual Security Guard: $99 a month, which adds live video monitoring by security professionals

Every current tier includes Video Event History, Smart Alerts and Extended Live View. Ring also sells add-ons such as Pro Intelligence and 24/7 Continuous Recording.

A warning about prices: third-party articles list different numbers, including older Basic, Plus and Pro names at roughly $3.99, $10 and $20, and some sites give other figures again. Plans also vary by country. Check the price in the Ring app or on ring.com before you subscribe.

What it adds up to over three years

Using the monthly prices above, and assuming they do not change, a plan costs about:

  • Ring Solo: $179.64 over 36 months
  • Ring Multi: $359.64 over 36 months
  • Ring Pro: $719.64 over 36 months

That is on top of the price of the hardware. With two devices at one address, two Solo plans ($9.98 a month) cost about the same as one Multi plan ($9.99). From the third device on, Multi is cheaper, as long as the prices are as listed when you buy.

Is a plan worth it?

  • Skip it if you only want to see who is at the door and talk to them. Live View, alerts and Two-Way Talk are free.
  • Pay for a plan if you need to check what happened while you were out, or if you want a video record for insurance or a dispute.
  • Consider a different brand if you want recording without a monthly fee. Our guide to doorbell cameras with no subscription compares options that store video locally.
